Art

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”– Picasso

At St. Breock Primary School, we value art and design as an important part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. Our art and design curriculum aims to engage, inspire and challenge children, equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to experiment, invent and produce their own pieces of artwork.

During their time at St. Breock primary school, children will become confident and proficient in a variety of techniques including drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques.

Children will leave St. Breock school with the knowledge of many famous artists, designers, craft makers and art movements through history. They will have an understanding of how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

From Year Two, each child will have their own sketchbook to design, practise and develop their skills and artworks. Children will become confident in analysing their own work as well as the work of many famous artists using the correct technical vocabulary.

Many of the vehicles through which the skills are taught are linked to our topics and may be taught in a cross curricular way. Lessons will also offer the chance for children to develop their emotional expression to further enhance their personal, social and emotional development during their time at St. Breock School.
