Writing at St Breock

At St Breock, our English Curriculum is split into Reading & Phonics and Writing, which includes handwriting, spoken language, spelling, punctuation and grammar. We aim for each child to become a lover of English and to understand how each skill taught, whether that be in Reading, Phonics, Writing or Grammar, will support development and success across the curriculum.
We have a well-organised English curriculum that provides many purposeful opportunities for reading, writing and discussion. Teachers adapt various resources as appropriate to their classes, but also ensure that cross curricular links with current topic work are woven into the programme of study to provide a platform for talk and deliver enriched opportunities for writing. Writing is celebrated and displayed in all classrooms and around the school.
We would like St Breock children to be enthusiastic, independent and lively writers with an innate desire to read for pleasure.
At St Breock, our aims for writing are to ensure that all pupils:
- acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language
- write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences
- have the opportunity to become a master and lover of English.
- Developing each child's fine motor skills to support handwriting progression.
- Developing an effective pencil grip to ensure handwriting progression.
- Developing each child's individual letter formations and joins.
- Developing each child's ability to maintain consistency and legibility whilst writing at speed.
