Welcome to Year 6!
Autumn Term
This term, our Year 6 historians will be exploring two fascinating periods of the past: The Maya Civilisation and The Victorian Age. When researching the Maya, children will explore how remarkable civilisation flourished against incredible odds. They’ll investigate the unique features of Mayan society, its culture, achievements, and way of life and draw comparisons with Britain during the same historical period. Our journey through the Victorian Age will spark curiosity and admiration as children learn about groundbreaking inventions and the rapid pace of change that defined the era. At the same time, they’ll gain insight into the challenges faced by those living in poverty. We’re excited for the rich discussions, creative projects, and critical thinking these topics will inspire.
Class Books

I will be reading to the children Carrie's War
Carrie's War is a 1973 English children's novel by Nina Bowden set during the Second World War. It follows two young London evacuees, Carrie and her younger brother Nick, into a Welsh village.
 ,
A Diary of a Young Girl, also known as Anne Frank's Diary.
Anne's precious diary reveals her fears and hopes during their time in the "Secret Annex" and gives dramatic insight into the lives of Jews struggling to survive under the threat of Nazism.
Science

During this unit of work, children will explore how animals and plants adapt to the environment in which they live. They will learn that adaptations occur over time and that may lead to a species evolving. Children will conduct an experiment to answer the question: which beak is best adapted to pick up a seed? They will consider how certain adaptations occur in response to environmental conditions. They will learn about natural selection and how this links to inheritance and how some characteristics are inherited from their parents, and some are not.
