Intent

At St Breock School, we believe that writing is a fundamental life skill that enables children to communicate, create, and make sense of the world around them. We are committed to developing confident, articulate writers who can express their ideas effectively for a range of purposes and audiences. Through rich language experiences, high-quality texts, and purposeful opportunities to write, we aim to foster a love of writing and empower pupils to see themselves as successful authors.

Aims

Through a carfeully planned writing curriculum, we aim to:

• Develop pupils' confidence and enjoyment in writing across a range of genres and subjects.
• Provide meaningful and engaging writing opportunities that inspire creativity and imagination.
• Teach the skills of composition, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and handwriting progressively and systematically.
• Enrich pupils' vocabulary and understanding of language through high-quality texts and discussion.
• Enable pupils to write clearly, accurately, and effectively for different audiences and purposes.
• Support pupils in planning, drafting, editing, and improving their work independently.
• Encourage pupils to take pride in the presentation and quality of their writing.
• Ensure all pupils make strong progress and leave primary school equipped with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed for the next stage of their education.

How do we teach writing?

In the Early Years Foundation Stage, writing development begins through a strong focus on gross and fine motor skill development, ensuring children build the physical foundations needed for successful writing. Children are encouraged to engage in meaningful mark making across both indoor and outdoor environments, gradually progressing from exploratory marks to recognisable letters, words, and sentences. Daily handwriting lessons, separate writing lessons, a language-rich curriculum, high-quality texts, and engaging opportunities to communicate ideas enable children to develop confidence as writers and build the skills needed for future success in writing. 

From Year One onwards, we continue to embed the foundational skills for writing. We teach handwriting sessions daily using the Morrells Handwriting scheme with a strong focus on writing posture, positioning of the paper, pencil grip and pencil pressure. In writing lessons, we work on understanding sentence structure. We use the Grammarsaurus scheme to teach grammar and punctuation and use high-quality model texts to teach the intricacies of different text types. We teach spelling through the Grammarsaurus scheme, focusing on morphology, etymology, and orthography to give the children a deep understanding of how words are built. Our writing curriculum is carefully mapped out from Nursery upwards, with exciting and engaging core texts underpinning each unit of work.
