EYFS
"The goal of early childhood education should be to activate the child's own natural desire to learn."
– Maria Montessori
Intent
At St Breock Primary School, our intention is to ensure that every child’s first experience of school is positive, meaningful and inspiring. We prioritise creating an EYFS environment where children feel safe, valued and motivated to learn, underpinned by our school motto, Learning, Love and Laughter.
We are committed to developing each child as an individual by equipping them with the essential skills, knowledge and understanding needed to succeed in Key Stage One and beyond. Our curriculum is designed to build strong foundations across the seven areas of learning, with a particular focus on communication and language, personal, social and emotional development, and physical development as the basis for all future learning.
We aim to support children in becoming confident, resilient and independent learners through the Characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning: playing and exploring, active learning, and creating and thinking critically. Alongside academic success, we place equal importance on children’s social and emotional development so that they reach their full potential and become happy, curious and engaged lifelong learners.
We aim to:
- Provide a rich and stimulating environment that engages, inspires and challenges pupils across all areas of learning
- Enable children to play, explore, experiment and create, developing their confidence to take risks and learn from experience
- Support pupils to communicate effectively, developing strong oracy and vocabulary skills in line with Early Learning Goals
- Encourage children to reflect on, evaluate and improve their work, supported by adults through high-quality interactions and modelling language
- Introduce pupils to a range of cultural and creative experiences, including artists, craftspeople and designers, to build cultural capital
- Develop children’s understanding of the world around them, making links between creativity, community, culture and past and present
- Ensure pupils begin to use and apply subject-specific vocabulary, laying the foundations for future learning.
- Foster independence, resilience and collaboration so children are well-prepared for the next stage of their education
